Write access to USB HDD via network

Hi, I am having trouble writing files from my mac over network to an attached USB HDD on my vu duo. I can write to the internal HDD.
Is there any way of doing this?

What is the filesystem of the external HDD?
If it is NTFS you'll have to install the drivers (from the feeds).

if using AFP make sure the privileges of the HDD are set to 777 (full guess access), check this with a FTP app.
