no, the default recording format on all STB's linux or otherwise is .TS or transport stream, this is one area that you cant pick and choose.

Not really: it's compressed rather well.
For devices that will not play a .TS simply renaming to .MPG usually does the trick.

PS: A TS comprises all data that was in the original stream, only demuxed. So epg data and teletext is also embedded.
