View Full Version : When will the QUAD be supporting a 3.x kernels?

Hello,

I was wondering if the QUAD can be using a 3.x kernel like some others GB.

Do we know if GB is going to release 3.x drivers or if this needs to be done by the community?

Thanks
XabiX

Without 'being GB' the answer is really quite easy: pretty sure GB will update the kernel; and as drivers can only be developed by the manufacturer it's up to them to release them, not to 'the community'.

I was under the impression that Gigablue are waiting on Broadcom to do something?

GB are waiting on broadcom to release the microcode so that they can increase the kernel version.

Naah, the SDK is there, that's not the point.

Hello,

yes GigaBlue quad will be with new Kernel 3.x.x supported

I then asked when if we know on which 3.x branch but no answer so far

Hope they release it soon... the Vu+ Solo2 comes with Kernel 3.x already and uses same Broadcom chipset... so guess missing SDK is not true...

Correct, but maybe they're optimising the drivers first before compiling them against a younger kernel?

what are the advantages of this 3.x kernel compared to the one we currentley use

Hi,
I can only speak from my experience with VU+. When they released a 3.x kernel they also switched to the UBIFS file system for flash which was quite a bit faster which means faster booting. Overall driver support for USB devices is better in new kernel.

no much news on the kernel 3.x and others features being dev or fixes in the pipe.

It's about compatibility (mainly for drivers), maintainability (it's hard to maintain an old kernel like this one) and support of modern features.
More or less the same reason we hardly use Windows 98 these days.
