What is the swap file?

What is the swap file? what is it for? do we need it?

I've also noticed on VIX you can set it at 96mb but in other images it can go as high as 512mb.

a swap file basically allows your receiver to use a portion of your USB stick or what ever device it's created on as virtual memory, most of the time it's of no use and can actually be a hindrance to the running of the box especially with receivers that have a large amount of ram such as the quad / ultimo etc.

it does come in useful for boxes with a relatively low amount of ram such as the duo and solo during times where lots of memory is needed such as EPG downloads.

personally i never use one and have had no reason to.
