BBC Ceefax, the world’s first teletext service, will cease to be from this week as the analogue television signal is switched off.

The final stage of the digital switchover will be completed at 11.30pm on October 23rd, when viewers in Northern Ireland will lose their analogue signal. It is the last part of the UK to switch off the signal, which has been in use for more than 70 years.

Households across the rest of the UK have already lost Ceefax after the analogue signal was phased out over the course of the year.

Ceefax was in use for more than three decades and provided news, features and services to viewers. For a long time Ceefax was the only on-demand real-time information network that allowed users to get news, weather and sports results. The service has been replaced by the ‘Red Button’ on digital television.

The Netherlands seems to be one of the last countries still using Teletext: a very much used functionality on all digital services (SD & HD).

we still have the digital version of teletext in the uk accessible via the red button services, but the old analogue predecessor to that CEEFAX is now dead and buried.

But that surely is not teletext, as it can't be used by E2-receivers? What I mean is that TT here is still in full swing. Although the DVB-hd protocol doesn't mention anything around TT, it still can be added the same way as before.

The Danish national tv DR1 & DR2 still have the old fashioned teletext service, so does TV2 (advertise funded) and even some Danish satellite chennels, TV3 DK, Kanal4 etc etc. So telerext is still popular in scandinavia. I personally still look up the news page, the tv listings page and weather using it and the one thing its really good for - looking at the digitial clock as a default when setting the many analog clocks around the place from/to summer time/ winter time!!!

Same in Holland & Belgium; all (satellite) channels have TT.
