My 4 day old reciever is now stuck on "starting" on vpd. (vu+ Duo)

I've tried install via USB which it completes and ask me to restart the box, just to get "starting"

Ive tried flashing via nullcable with Vu Utils but it just gets stuck on stage 2 of 3 .

I previously had Dreamelite image....and it happened after I restart it.

after u flash, remove usb and reboot,

wait for it a bit then what happens

how is the box connected to ur tv, try another method/cable if possible

unknown

am flashing via nullcable the software says "complete flashing all" but the vpd reads "continuing" . So should I restart now or wait?

grtmoby

Have you`ve been trying to put multiboot on the box?

unknown
09-09-10, 23:42
I tried Barry Allen but it never worked anyway. It would just reboot back to default image.

And Also I tried Multiboot USB cfe for VU+ where I manually placed the files because it wouldn't install via normal methods. Coud it be that?

grtmoby
09-09-10, 23:42
beware as not all images support multiboot, what r u using?

didn't see ur latest post:

yeah guess it is the reason, try to flash using usb after u format it and then put the image file on. DE has noted that their 133F doesn't support multiboot

unknown
09-09-10, 23:44
Well I never got it to work. I was using the DreamElite (lastest) image.

grtmoby
09-09-10, 23:45
yeah 133E and F versions doesn't support it and results in lot of issues as noted by DE themselves

Yes that`s your problem, it`s a very dangerous thing when you do it not right!!!

unknown

So what can I do?

grtmoby
09-09-10, 23:54
disconnect all additional to the box (usb, hdd, wireless dongle... everything) and try a flash with usb in front socket

Here a solution to recover you vu after it is not booting after using cfe multiboot from gigi:

thx to black_64

If you still got a telenet connection, then start at point 4.

You must do this:

1) boot your VU+ in the bootconsole (with serial cable, press Ctrl+c to stop the bootsequence)
2) copy this command to the console and press enter:

boot -z -elf flash0.kernel: 'rootfstype=jffs2 root=/dev/mtdblock0 rw mem=0x8000000 bcmrac=3`

3) your box should boot from flash
4) open a telnet session and enter this command:

flash_eraseall /dev/mtd5

5) reboot your box with this command:

reboot -f

That's all. I hope you get your box back running.

That`s not gonna help, use putty, you can find it on the web and you`re serial cable.

Switch the box off, on the rear side.
choose in putty for serial connect, speed must be set to 115200 and choose you`re comport.
Put the box on, when you`re connection is oke, you wil see some text scrolling over the putty screen.
Now use the ctrl + c key to stop the booting.
copy the following line in the screen:

boot -z -elf flash0.kernel: 'rootfstype=jffs2 root=/dev/mtdblock0 rw mem=0x8000000 bcmrac=3`

The box now reboot from the flash, so watch you`re box.
Then open telnet with dcc and put in the following line.

flash_eraseall /dev/mtd5

and after that the following line

reboot -f

Then you`re box is running again.

But how can I connect to DCC if I dont have a IP? I got up to this stage.

Past2Present
10-09-10, 00:28
The box start like before, so you must have the same ip adres as before, nothings changed.

unknown
10-09-10, 00:34
I tried my previous IP but theres nothing, I see the LED light flashing though. I even search all IPS with DCC but was nothing but my router....

Past2Present
10-09-10, 00:41
But when you open dcc, you`re preferences are loaded as they`re, or did you changed that also?

unknown
10-09-10, 00:43
Well I changed them....to try different IPs. Cant I force it tell what IP my box is. I was using 192.168.1.11 on DreamElite
But when I tried to flash with Nullcable it used 192.168.1.9

Past2Present
10-09-10, 00:46
use the setting from dream elite, what`s on the screen of the vu box?

unknown
10-09-10, 00:52
"Starting...." still.

checking usb
Loader:elf Filesys:tftp Dev:(null) File:usbdisk0:/aaf-vu.gz Options:rootfstype=ext3 root=/dev/sda8 rw rootdelay=10 mem=0x8000000 bcmrac=3`
Loading: Failed.
Could not load /aaf-vu.gz: File not found
Also this after 180 sec wait and restart

Past2Present
10-09-10, 00:55
that`s not ok, you did remove the usb stick i hope.

You`ve to do it again.

unknown
10-09-10, 01:01
Yeah that USB isnt in. Otherwise it would just reflash it again.

unknown
10-09-10, 01:02
OMG you fixed it!!! I would kiss you if I could see you :)

After the first command watch the screen of the vu box, it should be restarting with what you normally see, so starting, vudou, and the startchannel.

10-09-10, 01:05
Glad you`re box is up and running again

unknown
10-09-10, 01:07
Should I still do "flash_eraseall /dev/mtd5" because it seem to work with out.

Past2Present
10-09-10, 01:09
yes please, otherwise when you restart the box you will have the same problem again!!

Ok i will do that today for you, but it`s better to put it also on the page where you can download the multiboot-vX-cfe

grtz.

Just a question also...

I remember reading one user who had a problem a while before the multiboot cfe was released... Pretty sure it was at least... But he had to send his box for repair. Would this have sorted their box also, even though they didn't use the multiboot cfe?

Past2Present
10-09-10, 16:00
I think that`s just a problem with the box, which always can happen.

I think that`s just a problem with the box, which always can happen.

I've had a problem with the box quite often where it comes up with starting indefinitely, which then only resolves itself by turning off the power, waiting for about a minute, and powering backon... But this member had it where it wouldn't come out of the "Starting..." on screen, just like the member on here, and would be interested to know whether the fix you gave would work in all instances like that, or whether it's just specifically for this multiboot cfe thing?! (hopefully won't have the need to test it though :p)

Past2Present
10-09-10, 16:32
This is specific for the multiboot cfe as far as i know, but you can always try it, you have nothing to loose when it`s not starting.
The problem in this case is /dev/mtd5

Maybe there should be a warning for new users about multi boot. I remember the problems others had with multi boot on my old Technomate, images in flash not compatible with multi boot system. We males don't have a lot of hair to loose with problems like this. :)

Hi m8s

I lost a vu+ to multiboot for quite a while it seem to work ok but then killed the box i would suggest that you read up on any image your thinking of installing and then flash your box, I for one will no longer entertain multiboot as an option.

cant flash the box.it loads from usb or serial as normal then when asked to reboot is stuck on reading.using putty and serial it initialises cfe the multiboot and I cant stop it from rebooting by pressing control and c.as soon as I let go of keys it carries on rebooting

....I for one will no longer entertain multiboot as an option.
And why should you? Nowadays making and restoring a backup is safe, simple, fast and reliable; by far the best way to go to another image.

I had the same problem, and use a serial cable with a laptop, using Putty.

1) run putty with these settings (115200,8,n,1) serial and connect a nullmodem cable to your vu+, then start your VU+
2) give this command to the console and press enter:
boot -z -elf flash0.kernel: 'rootfstype=jffs2 root=/dev/mtdblock0 rw mem=0x8000000 bcmrac=3`, I copied and pasted this 3 times, and the box started up Okay, and has worked okay since.
