Recording to front USB?

I been trying to record (timeshift) to the front USB but it says "Timeshift not Possible".
I tried to mount the USB with no luck. Tried different USB still nothing.
Can I use timeshif with USB?

Why not keep a usb in the back?! Saves having to have the flap kept open...

Plus, you'll have to keep mounting and unmounting the drive if in the back...
