Amazon's best-selling Kindle e-reader is being used as a replacement for the Gideon Bible at a UK hotel.

The Hotel Indigo in Newcastle is providing guests with devices hosting an electronic version of the bible in place of the traditional hard copy of the book, The Daily Telegraph reports.

A selection of other holy texts is also available to download for free over the hotel's WiFi, a move that sees Hotel Indigo become the first establishment to offer such a service.

The Hotel Indigo is situated near the Literary & Philosophical Society library, the UK's largest independent library outside London.

"Putting Kindles in guests' rooms is a great way to give our guests a flavour of Hotel Indigo Newcastle's story and location near the Literary & Philosophical society," said the hotel's vice president of marketing Mike Greenup.

General manager Adam Munday added: "We wanted to reflect this literary history in a very contemporary way so are offering guests the use of cutting-edge Kindles pre-loaded with the Bible, instead of the more traditional hard-copy Gideon's Bible that they would expect to find in a hotel."

Earlier this week, it was reported that Amazon is preparing to launch two new Kindle Fire tablet devices in response to the announcement of Google's Nexus 7.
