After reading a closed thread from ttt1892 i noted that he has problems with converting AVI to MKV. Although I haven't tested the MKV files out yet on my VU+ they do seem to play perfectly on a MKV player.
The program I used is "mkvmerge GUI", a freebie and also will happily convert HD files as well.
