yes you need to have the latest bootloader installed before loading any Linux kernel 3.1.1 or higher based image to the receiver which is what ViX 2.4 is.

as for the best image well thats a matter of personal taste and only you can decide for your self. what i would do is install the bootloader followed by ViX 2.4 then once setup make a full image backup blue button> ViX> image manager> yellow button. then you can try as many other images as you like and still return to a working ViX image in just a few minutes if thats what you want tot do.
