hello. is it possible to format a drive in ext4 on a pc and put it into duo? also will it benefit over being formatted in ext3 on duo what with it being a journaled filesystem?

On a Linux PC: yes.
But the box can do that as well for you.
But Ext3 already has the journaling.

i did not realise you could get box to setup ext4, only ext3. so is there no benefit to had doing it ext4 instead of ext3 thanks

Ext4 has a slightly better performance on handling large files. No big deal though.
