Microsoft's Windows XP remains the most-used operating system in the world, new figures suggest.

Stats from NetApplications reveal that the decade-old software saw a small resurgence in January, despite steadily losing users to current edition Windows 7.

Windows XP claimed 47.19% of the market, rising from 46.5% in December 2011. Microsoft's latest OS's market share dropped to 36.4% from 37% the previous month.

However, XP's overall share has declined by approximately 58% compared to this time last year. Microsoft is encouraging customers to move away from the old software, reminding users that it will no longer support the OS from April 2014.

Windows 7 saw year-on-year gains of 13% largely attributed to the fact that the programme comes pre-loaded with most new PCs. Its successor Windows 8, available only as a Developer Preview, saw its share fall to 0.2% from 0.5% point last month.

Windows operating systems claimed a combined total of 92% of the market. Apple's Mac OS X grabbed 6.39%, a marginal increase from last month and a 1% year-on-year improvement.
