Virgin Media has claimed that problems with its broadband service in the UK have been "resolved", after the firm suffered a major national outage yesterday evening (January 17).

Cable broadband customers took to Twitter to show their dissatisfaction at the disruption to their internet service during peak time on Tuesday.

Virgin Media said that the UK-wide outage was ADSL broadband service and that its engineers were working on a solution.

In a short statement today, Virgin Media said that the ADSL customers experienced loss of connection between 5pm and 8pm, but the problems are now fixed.

The company apologised for the outage, and advised any customers still having problems to reboot their routers.

"If you experienced a loss of internet connection between 5pm and 8pm on Tues 17th January, we experienced a national outage during this time, which is now resolved," said the firm.

"If you have still not been able to reconnect - please try powering down your router for five minutes and then turn back on and this should re-establish your connection. Virgin Media apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Virgin Media has pledged to double broadband speeds in the UK for all its customers as part of a £110m network upgrade programme.

But the outage is a blow to Virgin Media, after Ofcom announced last November that the firm has the biggest proportion of subscribers dissatisfied with its customer service for landline, broadband and pay-TV.

In 2009, the company was hit by two service blackouts in the Midlands and East London, involving some customers being without services for days on end.
