Virgin Media has partnered with the BBC to develop a new BBC Sport application for the TiVo service, offering interactive coverage of sporting events including the London 2012 Olympics and Euro 2012.

Following the launch of the BBC iPlayer and BBC News apps on TiVo, Virgin intends to work with the corporation to introduce a BBC Sport app to the platform next year.

The forthcoming BBC Sport app will offer an "enhanced Red Button" experience bringing together live streams of events such as Formula One, Wimbledon, Euro 2012 and the London 2012 Olympics in one place, alongside additional content produced by BBC Online.

The BBC Sport app will sit alongside the BBC's existing BBC News and BBC iPlayer apps on the TiVo service, which has attracted around 222,000 subscribers since it launched in December 2010.

As part of its London 2012 coverage plans, the BBC has committed to "bringing live sport from every venue where it's happening", meaning it will deliver 24 simultaneous live streams on the BBC Sport website and Red Button, four times more than Beijing in 2008.

BBC Future Media controller of business development Jane Weedon said: "Having partnered with Virgin Media to bring BBC iPlayer to TV back in 2008, we have since brought a vastly-improved, fully-integrated experience of BBC iPlayer to Virgin Media's TiVo Service.

"With the addition of the BBC News app and enhanced BBC Sport services - all accessible via the Red Button - we plan to build on this partnership and continue to innovate in connected TV through 2012."

Virgin Media executive director of digital entertainment Cindy Rose added: "Our innovative new TiVo service offers a whole world of catch-up, on demand, HD, 3D and live TV content and we're delighted to be adding the BBC's next generation News and Sport services to the lineup.

"2012 promises to be an unforgettable year for UK viewers and our customers can look forward to every minute of it. We're pleased to be partnering with the BBC to make even more of their content available on what is the UK's most advanced TV platform."
