View Full Version : Ultimo vs duo??
Hi Does anyone know the difference between the two boxes and is the difference worth the extra money?
I think there is an extra tuner but what benefit does that have?
There are lots of differences...
ULTIMO has newer procesor, more memory, newer tuners (I think). But, the tuners are plug n play, and also have a loop through. Also, there is possibility of having 3 tuners. This means that you can have 3 feeds in to the box (enigma2 allows 4, so you can also plug a usb tuner in as well ;)). This allows you to watch / record more channels all at the same time. Also, the tuners have dvbs2 (hd satellite) and dvb-t/c (terrestrial and cable), so you have more flexibility... Finally, the remote on the ultimo looks to be the dogs danglies, and it also comes with a wifi adapter included which will definitely work, so no need to worry whether yours will work (if you don't have a wired lan connection). Finally, the ultimo has a nice looking vfd ... better than the ones on duo/et9k
As for cost, only you can decide whether it's worth it for you...
hth
Thank you for the reply.
When you say the tuner has terrestrial and cable, what does this mean.
thank you.

Never having had one, I can't say with 100% certainty, but I assume it means you can use it for either terrestrial tv (i.e. from a standard roof aerial), or for cable television (such as virgin media)...

Exactly: the Ultimo is absolutely the better one, but do you need it/want to pay it? And of course the DUO still is an excellent box.
btw: you forgot to mention the large OLED.

Nah, was still there ;) Just I wasn't sure it was an oled, so didn't want to mention that name, so kept it just as vfd :p

seen a ultimo pic a while back displaying picons in the oled display looking very cool
thank you.
i have virgin media also and this would be useful as i have had to use my virgin box for terrestrial channels when the weather was really bad there due to the picture being un-watchable with the wind :)

Yep, the ViX image supports that.

How do I get it working with vix ?
im not sure we have the picons yet, can you not copy the ones from vti over and use it on vix, i assume they should still work the same

Sorry, you lost me there: what do you want to get working?
Picons on OLED?
Try our preliminary set: unzip and FTP icons to \lcd_picon

No didn't work :(
try the files rob posted above see if that works. i woulda assumed oled picons would work across all images as long as they on the same directory on root

Sorry didn't see the attachment before.
So these go onto the root directory ?
If so thats prob why the vti icon's didn't work as they installed to usb/piconlcd
aslong as they on root of usb or root of flash then they should work. try em on root of flash
They are copying over to root of flash as I type :)
Ok copied to flash root, and rebooted, but didn't work.
So deleted from flash root, and put on usb root.
Another reboot, but still didn't work.
Guess it's still work in progress

Sure the location is set to "\lcd_picon"?
Sure the location is set to "\lcd_picon"?
I did miss out the \ on the folder name.
Just doing a reboot now (files on root of usb stick).
Still not working for me.
I am assuming the "'s don't need to be on the folder name ?
Also I have the folder in the root of flash and usb now, both labelled as \lcd_picon.
However there is a folder inside called small_lcd1 does that need to be the root folder and renamed \lcd_picon ?
So the folder name on the root is lcd_picon and in that folder are all the picons image files
So the folder name on the root is lcd_picon and in that folder are all the picons image files
I have tried the following combinations on the root of flash and root of usb individually and both together:
lcd_picon with files in this dir, and also with files inside the small_lcd1 directory
\lcd_picon with above combinations
and "\lcd_picon" as above
Also tried it with the vti picons in the above folders and still no joy.
I think might need to wait for andy to see if oled picons r supported on vix image yet as andy might not coded it in yet

Only the picons for the OLED.
Oh, i forgot: also set display settings to "show picons"--> "Yes".

I am wondering if it's been removed from the release image, as it's something thats still in progree.

Yeh I have done that bit (thinking it would auto switch them on for me earlier).
first you need a lcd picon set, 2nd you need to turn it on in SETUP -- DISPLAY, you should the default vix picon is display until you get a lcd pcion set
Hi Does anyone know the difference between the two boxes and is the difference worth the extra money?
I think there is an extra tuner but what benefit does that have?
The Duo is an excellent box and still is. If you have no need for further tuners nor plugin tuners then you really do not need to look that much further.
The Ultimo is however a fantastic machine and very flexible but lets be honest a lot of people have and are still pefectly ok with a single tuner machine. In that respect the Duo is still way ahead of the pack by having two.
The hardware on the Ultimo is certainly impressive and the faster processor is great but the Duo is no slouch by any means.
On the physical side of it, I would actually say that the Duo is the better built machine out of the two. The quality of the casing and build overall for example appears to be marginally better than the Ultimo.
You also have the remotes. Ultimo's remote looks fantastic. This of course is a personal preference but personally I find the Duo's remote more comfortable.
The Ultimo is of course a beautiful looking machine. The OLED VFD is stunning and the touch sensitive buttons on the front panel give it some class.
Of the two the Ultimo is the better model but the $million question is, is it worth all that much extra ? Once again this is personal preference as the Duo is a high end receiver and in itself miles ahead of anything else on the market.
I think when you get into comparing machines and specs then you can get drawn into all sorts of equations and lose sight of what it is you are trying to achieve. When it comes to Linux receivers then it can become a blur. The Xtrends/Clarkes are also very capable machines.
If you are going for a Linux machine then I would certainly say build quality should be one of your key concerns. All these high end receivers are in actual fact simply Linux PC's converted into set top boxes and you really have to consider things like PSU's, cooling and quality of components.
Enthusiasts do consider these elements seriously as they tend to use their machines extensively and for extended periods of time, which is where quality eventually tells.
At the end of the day I would say out of the Uno or Duo, at current prices I would certainly go for the Duo. Out of the Duo and the Ultimo, it's a price thing and how flush you're feeling. You won't go wrong with either.
For the record I have both Duo and Ultimo.
Hope that helps.
first you need a lcd picon set, 2nd you need to turn it on in SETUP -- DISPLAY, you should the default vix picon is display until you get a lcd pcion set
The only picon i've seen with the vix image, is when selecting a channel from the bouquet it shows the Virtuosso Image Xtreme picon, but that is all, once you pic a channel no picons are displayed.

I disagree with that statement, the casing is of the same quality as the Duo, just that the Ultimo has a piano black shiny finish, some users would say that it cheapens the look, others would love it. Personally at first I wasn't a great lover of the shiny finish, since using for a few days I love it :)
I think they look great and would look real nice amongst anyones A/V setup and far better than duo looked (for me anyway) really nice pieca kit :p

Indeed I do; I hate those shiny dust and fingerprint magnets.
I hate those shiny dust and fingerprint magnets.
+1 however i'd say the duo was just as bad as a dust magnet.
Looks wise the Ultimo is 1000% better than the ugly ducklin (duo).
It could still have done with being more curved though imo (but I rather have something that works, than a box that looks pretty) lol
Evo the oled picons will start working in the next update. There was a bug which andy found and fixed so ull be able to use them soon and tey do look sweeet on the display :p

Hmmm, I don't think so: I bet you learned a lot about your box. And as we don't use those OLED-Picons, you set us on the trail of a bug (since we found them to be working apparently several lines have got lost).........

Yes, you can.
Go to the file "skin_display_picon.xml" located at "/usr/share/enigma2", open it with a suitable editor (e.g. PSPad, set to "Linux") and add the following lines to "InfoBarSummary":
<widget source="session.CurrentService" render="LcdPicon" position="179,17" size="76,45" >
<convert type="ServiceName">Reference</convert>
</widget>
If you then restart Enigma you will see your much wanted OLED-Picons (if they are there and at the right location that is......).
Keep us posted.

Ok so the VIX OLED-Picon is on the display now :)
But so far I haven't got it using any of the picons you posted up the other day.
I have tried all combinations that I previously tried and it doesn't seem to work.
Any more clues on where to put the lcd_picon or \lcd_picon folder ?

Location
/lcd_picon

Sorted all working fine now :)
The problem was that inside the folder you posted the other day, there was another folder "small_lcd1" and all the picons were inside there.
Moved them all into the main "lcd_picon" folder and there working fine now :)
Thanks again.
Oh btw just for info, the VTI picon's don't work with VIX image (just give black space where the picon should be)
Ok just for info, I have got the vti oled / lcd picon's working with vix image.
There picons are quite large compared to the sample vix ones, therefore needed some editing doing in the skin_display_picon.xml
Looks pretty sweet tbh :D

Might be last vid for a while, whilst it was uploading, I thought i'd try and get my favourite skin to work (HD Glass 16) but when installing onto vix I couldn't download the icon's for it.
So flashed back to BH, installed the icon's onto usb stick.
Then flashed back to vix.
Now it's stuck on Blackhole bootloader screen for some reason.
Sorry to hear that buddy, but you will get ti sorted, if not post up.
As for the skin, its nice but its not compatible with VIX. I had it on my ET9K and it gave untold headache with button mapping even when I had uninstalled it.
Have you tried VIX night, its very nice.

to be honest mate i really would not bother with HD glass any more. i used it my self for several months and it did the job nicely untill i found out just how much hidden crap it installs onto the box. and trying to remove that is a nightmare.

It does work with VIX, but not fully, as you say some key mappings are out on it (might contact shamann and see if he can make it fully compatable).
I have tried the VIX HD night skin (default skin on ultimo) and I agree it is nice, but HD Glass is my fav lol.

Most icons, etc are now downloaded seperate, hence the file sizes have reduced a fair amount.

Yeh he might not even be interested as I believe he uses Azbox or something similar.
But he did fix it for BH 1.6.7 beta2 when I asked him, as it was totally incompatable with that.
Ok got the box working again, had to flash it back to blackhole, go through the setup part and then it let me fully reflash it and vix is up and running again for the moment :)

From what I can see, only 13°e and 19°e are covered.
Nothing at all from 28.2°e.
I will check some of the other main sats in a while to be certain.

yes even some of the standard picon packs from some very popular guys are now rather lacking in support for 28.2 east, so not sure how oled picons are going to fare.
Right just checked and it is only 13°e and 19°e that have oled picons so far.
Nothing on any other sats (and I get pretty much all sats from 57°e - 45°w).

I disagree with that statement, the casing is of the same quality as the Duo.
The case lid feels like lighter grade of steel over the Duo though ? Perhaps it's just me.
I understand it's all personal preference and each to their own. It's what's under the lid that counts !
Soon Vu+ owner here. Have been running a homemade PC PVR the past 7 years. GBPVR from analogue to digital NextPVR. TT1500 card with CI/Cam. Works fairly well.
Anyway, want something fresh to play with, get HD channels and be able to record/see more than one prog at a time. Therefore I'll be getting a Duo or Ultimo at the end of the month. Will be putting up a dual LNB and the second lead for the second tuner. However, trying to justify the added cost of the Ultimo....
The sensible option is go for the Duo, good price and proven.
The nerd in me says the Ultimo. Can upgrade to a 3rd tuner, faster and might play my existing 2GB of movies. better than a Duo??? Thinking of hooking up an external drive with this stuff. Thoughts?
As for image, probably go with Vix as this site seem to offer a lot of help. I understand that this site is the Vix developers site right?

Although I do understand the "nerds-thoughts", for playback and the use of an external drive that will hardly make any difference.
Thanks for the replies.
I read that some people had problems with playing back various file formats, sync issues and the stuttering on the Duo. I was thinking that the Ultimo would handle better.

The same applies to the Ultimo. An STB will never be a full scale MediaPlayer, as decoding is limited to the codecs build in the hardware. A MediaPlayer or PC can decode much more (variations on) codecs, as they can be handled in software (by the processor).

Even better than that:
If you get a Duo you will always wonder if you should have got the Ultimo, if you get the Ultimo and it's too much for your needs, you can always trade it for a Duo and some cash :D
Also in the future XBMC will come to the Ultimo but not DUO.
It comes down to cost. If you can afford the extra money, than go for the Ultimo, better processor, more ram:thumbsup:
