German independent cable operator Kabel & Medien Service (KMS) has signed a deal with Sky Deutschland to carry 15 HD channels on its networks.

The agreement includes the just launched Sky Sport News HD channel, the first German language 24 sports news channel. Next year, Sky plans to expand its HD offer to 20 channels. KMS said it will also carry these new channels.

KMS serves around 500,000 homes in Bavaria and competes with Kabel Deutschland locally. KMS offers a triple-play including the Cablesurf broadband access product. The operator claims to be the first to have introduced the DOCSIS standard in the country in 1997.

Apart from taking the Sky premium chnanels, KMS also offers the digital TV channels from the Eutelsat Kabelkiosk head-end in the Sky platform. This includes the HD versions of the private German broadcasters RTL and ProSiebenSat.1.
