OK, so I just got my S2 today, had a quick play with it, and looking great. So, got old phone, downloaded my backup to get the backup sorted to transfer everything over... Looked in to the rooting of it (to restore data and stuff, and generally allow more customisability :D), and then had a few questions...

So, rooting looks like I need to flash new recovery/insecure kernel etc, in the form of CF-Root 5.0... But, then I've read about this Yellow triangle/flash counter. Which looks like I need a usb jig to reset. But, does this affect just rooting, and not flashing a custom roms?!

Anyone who's rooted (mkd/jcm have had s2's, not sure if you rooted?!), does this affect the triangle thingy? Is it easy to revert back if wanted to remove the CF-Root?

Tried reading around, but so much info, and my head's in a spin atm!!! lol

Cheers for all info guys :)

there are issues with cwm5 from what ive read, best to stick with cwm4.

as for rooting, it depends on what software/kernal your phone is currently using. its a very simple process.

the counter for the yellow triangle goes up when u flash new roms, the usb jig resets this.

tons of info on XDA forums.

im using checkrom revolution hd custom rom on mine at the minute with an ics theme, tis pretty nice.

Hadn't read that bit yet ... more info to think on then :p

Baseband is XXKI1 and Kernel is XWKI4. From a thread on XDA forums, I saw CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip as being the one I need, but not sure?!

Any jig ok? They all the same I guess?

Yeah, that's the problem, too much :p

Just sticking with stock rom I was, but since I will probably need a jig anyway for the rooting, may as well flash too. So will keep that rom in mind :)

my f/w was KI4 aswell but the rooting file i use is different to that one.

i think all the jigs are the same, mine works a treat, £1 -£2 off ebay :)

some very good devs on XDA, theyve tweaked alot of stuff on the S2.

Pooface i recommend installing kies as well for the galaxy s 2 drivers, i would also suggest odin to reflash back to stock roms.you only need the jig if you want to reset your cutom rom count for a repair etc otherwise you dont need one

Right, well will have a nights rest now, and look in to this more in the morning :p

As for jig, cheapest on ebay was £2, but no feedback. Next cheapest £4, so guess going with that :p (UK stock that is)

All rooted and running ok. Jig reset worked after downgrading the bootloader. Running the revo hd rom, and all running fine by the looks of it :) Had a few hiccups on wifi, but mostly been ok.

Gotta say tho, this phone is really nice :D

Great phone - Im running mine on a Modaco Rom at the moment, I was going to change it this week but we are not far away from ICS so am now waiting for that. One thing I will recommend though is that you use this 12646 to fully backup your EFS folder if you are going to flash different kernels/ROMs. The EFS folder contains all the encrypted information for your IMEI etc and if it gets corrupted there is no known way to restore it without a backup resulting in a very expensive media player.

Hmmm, should I have done that before I even rooted/changed rom? Or would I be ok running that now with a different custom rom installed?

Cheers

you will be fine doing it now - it was the same for me, I only found out after I had rooted, unlocked and reflashed fortunately everything was fine, there are also a couple of apps in the market that will back it up to your Micro SD, Have you installed Clockwork Mod ?

Have backed up the EFS data now, thanks for that tip Maxwell :)

Just in case there's anyone else around who has to use a proxy to connect to their work wifi, then here's a nice little app that allows you to automatically start the proxy whenever you connect to that wifi network. Tried a few and none worked ... so far, this one's working a treat :)

rooting is what happens on android to get full control of device. iPhone 5 uses a "jailbreak"... Do a google search for that. If you still need more information, please create your own thread...
