Hi can anyone recommend a silent sata hdd for recording I've got a hitachi desk star 500gb and it sounds like a lawn mower when recording.

Desk Stars are noisy full stop.

I have a 320gb Western Digital 2.5" one in mine - almost silent.

Best is to use a special DVR-HDD; they run at 5400RPM (or so), are silent, fast in spinning up and not producing much heat.
Remember that speed and cache are no issue for a DVR, not even when making 6 recordings and watching another at the same time.

SSD is the ultimate solution.

Hehe, no, absolutely not for a DVR.

Why not? Surely as it has no moving parts it will be quieter and more energy efficient.

Both correct.
But: a SSD is for situations were data is needed fast, but not often (such as a system HDD in a PC). And besides: it will need TRIM, otherwise it will wear out very fast indeed.

SSD are also much more expensive than regular HD and you will not get any benifit in this case. If it's within your budget then it's fine.
I personally use regular 2.5' laptop HD in my boxes (don't need high performance laptop HD).
They are very quiet, draw less power and produce less heat.
Consequently, this put less stress on the stb's power supply and so the box runs cooler.
I started using 2.5' HD when I had problems with my first linux box: a DM7025 which had a badly designed power supply that did not give enough power and badly overheated when a regular desktop HD was installed.
I find that Vu+ did a good job by providing a HD bracket that can accomodate both 3.5' and 2.5' HD.
The selection is large, just pick the capacity you need.
