There is finally some good news for users who want an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.

iPhone hacker pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team has just announced that he has discovered a bug in iOS 5 that could help in developing an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.

pod2g announced the discovery of the bug via the following tweet:

Hey jailbreaking friends, I've found a bug that can untether iOS 5. Don't expect a release soon, but I'm gonna work hard in it.

It is not clear whether the bug also exists in iOS 5.0.1 beta that Apple has seeded to developers of iOS developer program. pod2g also hasn't mentioned if the untethered jailbreak will work on iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

iPhone Dev team and iH8sn0w have released Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze to jailbreak iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1 betas, but they only support a tethered jailbreak. BigBoss has also developed a hack called SemiTether that allows users to reboot their tethered jailbroken iOS 5 device without the need to connect it to the computer, but it has some limitations. So many users especially iPhone users have been eagerly waiting for an untethered jailbreak.

pod2g also hasn't provided an ETA on when the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 will be released, but with Apple expected to release iOS 5.0.1 very soon, we expect the Chronic Dev team to release the untethered jailbreak only after iOS 5.0.1 is released. They will probably release a new version of greenpois0n - their popular jailbreak tool, which supports the untethered jailbreak.

As always, we'll let you know if there is any further updates, so stay tuned here
