Help Completely new to sat boxes

Hi Guys & Gals,
I am absolutely new to sat boxes but now have a technomate 800 and would like to start to know a little about what goes on, so to start with can anyone explain what an image is?

An image is the firmare image of the receiver. Basically the software/operating system.
