Try useing Flash ftp or even cute ftp, as they are good file transfer proggy m8 ?? and they both work on a DM500s and the answer to your question, i would think yes, it look straight forward.....

Only ever flashed a dm500 once but you will also need a telnet client time to run the command. Can use windows built in one or use putty.
If your on windoze 7 you need to enable it as not done by default.

I am okay using telnet as I use Linux OS on my laptop, so its easy to log in to the box via telnet.

The box was working fine for a long time, but after a recent channel list update and network settings change it is playing up and keeps packin up, so its time for a reflash, and going to reflash with Commando.

Meant to add - I have never flashed a DM500 box any other way than Dreamup and I cant find my rs232 usb cable....

So going to FTP use Optiflasher and see how it goes. Otherwise a cable will be purchased from fleabay!!

I don`t no much about optiflash, but is that for a enigma2 box, looking at it m8 from the internet photo`s,all i`m seeing is enigma2 in the prog, i`m not seeing anything that says enigma1, so check it out first before you use it ??

Once you get your head round FlashFTP, or CuteFTP, you will find no easier proggy for working within your dreambox 500s m8, I would recommend you start to get familiar with one of these software programs, they will help you a lot in the future ???

I am okay with Cute FTP / Filezilla - no problem at all using them.

Is it literally a case of ftp'ing to my tmp folder then using the telnet command....

Yes it is mate, these are the instructions I followed

To flash an image using Telnet

This method will only work with a .img image file.

Rename the image file to backup.img
FTP the image file to the /tmp folder on the dreambox
Telnet to your box and paste the following command:
