I am already the owner of the fab ET9000 and just have a few questions regarding the 5000 as I am thinking of purchasing one for my parents.

They have no interest in recording so the ET9000 is overkill.

Can the 5000 use the 9000 plugins?
Can the 5000 use the 9000 skins (eg Glass)?
Does the 5000 have the same EPG?
Will the 5000 get the new ViX image?

My parents are quite technical (for their age! :rolleyes:) so after a brief tutorial I am sure they would be able to use it if the skin/epg is similar to my 9000.

Any other box I should consider as an alternative?

Thanks

Can the 5000 use the 9000 plugins? Yes most of them. Not the browser.
Can the 5000 use the 9000 skins (eg Glass)? Pretty sure you can yes.
Does the 5000 have the same EPG? Yes
Will the 5000 get the new ViX image? Yes

Hope the above helps.

Can the 5000 use the 9000 plugins? More or less, but if you are going with VIX as per your last post than the image is exactly the same
Can the 5000 use the 9000 skins (eg Glass)? Yes they can but again would caution in my experience they do not work as well as the default skin, in new release you will have a new darker skin as well. When I used galss HD it actually messed up some of the button functions.
Does the 5000 have the same EPG? If you use VIX, it will be the same as the ET9K, any other image it depends what they install by default or what is in the feed
Will the 5000 get the new ViX image? Yes, all our supported boxes get updated at the same time.

My parents are quite technical (for their age! :rolleyes:) so after a brief tutorial I am sure they would be able to use it if the skin/epg is similar to my 9000.

I've put my reply next to your questions in bold.

I own both the ET9K and Et5K and both are brilliant boxes. As for other boxes it really depends on your budget, as DUO SOLO is a very nice box as well as the UNO, which has a VFD.

Also dont forget to check out our sponsor when it comes to ordering whichever one you decide on.

Thanks for the responses fellas.

ET5K ordered from the sponsor :thumbsup: (Forgot to add - with ViX image of course!)

Should keep the oldies happy for a while!

Good choice. Et5k is a very nice lil box and quick too. Had 1 for a while and you wont be disapointed :D

Hello guys... i am a new here and i am from Greece! I have the ET5000 and i just connected my extrenal HDD WD Passport and i have couple of questions:

1.) Should i initialize it?
2.) This hdd doesn't have power (i think most of you know that :P ), so is that important?

yes it should be initialized, but any thing thats on the drive will be lost, "initialize" means reformatted, so the drive will be wiped clean

regarding power, I think the drive gets power from the unit

Thank's for the quick answer! The backup just begun, so i hope i can finaly write from ET to WD!

After initialization where can i change the destination folder?

1.)Menu-->Setup-->System-->Recording Paths??
2.)Menu-->Timer-->Timer Editor??

Once initialise, mount the drive as HDD and it should default to that and if not than its via recording path.
