Sony’s Personal 3D Viewer – the HMZ-T1, has launched exclusively in Harrods London. The world’s first 3D compatible Head Mounted Display with high definition OLED panels will be available in the world famous store first and Sony Centres will start taking delivery later this month.

The futuristic looking Sony Personal 3D Viewer combines twin HD (1280 x 720) displays with 5.1 surround sound to immerse the viewer in 3D Blu-ray movies and gaming whilst being shut off from the outside world.

There are already similar head mounted displays on the market but this is the first to use OLED technology. OLED screens offer a fast response time of 0.01 milliseconds for smooth motion of fast moving sequences. They also provide richer colours and greater contrast compared to LCD panels.

Sony point out that the HMZ-T1 is not just a 3D viewing device but also suitable for 2D viewing. The effect is like watching a 750 inch virtual screen from a distance of 20 metres away. Unfortunately for gamers, the rumoured head-tracking functionality has not made it to the commercial version. The 3D visor can display content from a PS3 or Blu-ray player.

Sony have incorporated ‘virtual phones technology’ to deliver a simulated 5.1 surround sound experience and four sound modes – cinema, game, music and standard.

James Forrester, Category Marketing Manager for Home Video, Sony UK, says: “The Personal 3D Viewer really is a new way to experience films and games in three dimensions. Our goal was to recreate the cinema experience, in an immersive, personal headset. The clarity of sound and picture that the Personal 3D Viewer is able to deliver makes it just like a mini-cinema that’s just for you.”

The price is expected to be approx £500 and 3D Focus TV will be reviewing the device soon.
