Need advise on a new amp

hey guys looking at getting a new amp

want ti to have 3D 1.4, 7.1 minimum surround and i dunno how I'm gonna do this but to connect a PC sound into it [maybe via toslink]

what I'm keen on at the moment is this one

Is only 5.1, not 7.1, but, I was looking at this one the other day thinking it sounded quite good:

How much you looking to spend? The above has speakers and amp. Might only be good as a starter kit, which is all I want...

Whilst we're on the subject ... anyone know of any good speaker stands?

i was looking at the same thing mate some sale sites say its 5.1 and some 7.1 but the officail website says its 7.1 and looking at the back of it it looks liek a 7.1

well for a 7.1 with all that i want and teh ipod connection network etc etc i wanna spend about £400-5 on amp and £100-2 on speakers

the one your looking at is nice but far too entry level for me

im a gadget buff only high end will do lmao

I would go for this within your budget, much better sound than the Onkyo you are looking at

One thing I will advise though is that you revise your budget for speakers upwards somewhat as you will not get a decent 7.1 set for £200 unless you plan on upgrading the speakers at a later date you will not really appreciate the quality of a midrange AV receiver.

For the speakers I would suggest getting a decent front 3 L,R & C matched set initially then add the surrounds and decent sub when finances allow, take a look at Q acoustics or Monitor Audio for the front 3 which will be a good match for the Pioneer amps

One last piece of advice go get a demo with your preferred amp and speakers and take some music or film you know well to use as the source.

the vsx921 fo rthe price aint worth it it doesnt have the features i want

but the 1021 looks promiseing and only £100 odd more

I think this amp has PC HMDI marked on it, I would have thought you would use this. I'm not sure if it will be 5.1 or 7.1. It really depends on the laptop if any Audio outputs Optical or Coaxial. You should be able transmit these sounds over the network. I can transmit wireless DTS from a Laptop via a media player.

thanks alec i worked out what to do

my pc has component and optical spdif so im gonna use that to send the audio and will get full 7.1 as teh pc is 7.1 aswell

7.1 is usually present on blu-rays HD audio, you will not get 7.1 hd audio thru optical or coaxial
it has to be hdmi

the core tracks are normal ac3 and dts which are mostly 5.1 and on the odd occcasion 6.1, which are ok thru optical or coaxial.
and 99% of 7.1 blu-rays are upconverted audio, there are only a few true 7.1 titles, its abit of a waste at this time.

yeah i agree DTS Master is not on many things but if im gonna spend near to a grand i might as well go all out so i dont have to upgrade in a year or 2

will have to look at HDMI audio in that case

i think there is a special cable that can do that

there are no special cables for anyhting, a normal cable is fine.

dts master / dolby truhd can be 7.1 but its mostly upconverted to 7.1.

dts master is on almost every blu-ray but encoded with 5.1 surround.
dolby truhd is on quite a few aswell but with 5.1 surround.

i was reffering to the 7.1 audio ones mostly being upconverted.

just brought the 616 from R sounds easy to set up with lots of audio settings to pick from .only drawback is the wireless dongle at £50 ,But we know how to avoid that , thanks to our sponsor ,inputs can be renamed makes life easy here change appears on screen and in the amps display ,speakers can be bi wired if you so choose ,and the best news was they all could tell the differance old amp was a cambridge azure .:)
