    Newby Questions

    Hello all.

We have Virgin Media in the house with a Tivo Box and some older box, V+ I think.

I've recently setup an HD Homerun with an indoor digital aerial and am using that to record stuff onto my Plex DVR but i don’t find the EPG very good.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a basics guide so i can understand what the next steps would be in terminating my VM service and setting up my own system please?

Do we need to get a roof ariel? Do I need to get a dish (is that an LNB)?

What's the best way of recording TV and then distributing content, like i say i use Plex at the moment onto phone/tablet/smart TV?

Sorry for all the questions, I’m new.

We have a new feature in the image for users of Plex.

It depends what receiver you get.
A terrestrial tuner will require an aerial. An outside aerial will be better than an indoor one.
A satellite tuner will require a dish. A dish needs an LNB.

    Right getting there.

So the boxes have tuner options. DVB-S/S2 is satellite so requires a dish and LNB. DVB-T/T2 is terrestrial so requires an aerial. I think that the 2 variant is HD. I currently have an indoor aerial attached to a HDHomerun which ive linked to my Plex server.

    DVB-C is cable right?

Each tuner can recieve a single signal so 2x receivers means i can record two programmes on at the same time.

Whats the difference between the builds? ViX, PLi, XTA and ATV.

FreeSat and Freeview have the same channel listing right?

On most Linux Satt boxes you will be able to add the Dreamplex addon so you can run plex,
    Yes DVB-C is for cable
The difference between the firmware ( i.e builds) is tricky as they all do essentially the same thing, some boxes can only have certain builds also some skins (how you want your box to look) will only work with a specific firmware, It's mainly down to personal preference than anything else
2 Tuners does mean you could record 2 programs at the same time as long as they are on the same satellite. but recording on both tuners at once would limit the channels you could watch while recording as you would only be able to watch channels on the same transponder (google about transponders it will be easier than me trying to write an essay explaining how channels are grouped )
Yep the channels are pretty much identical there are a few more channel you can find with a satellite set ( Or a lot more if you add a motor or multiple LNB's (As a newbie I wouldn't recommend going a multiple LNB route unless you fancy doing a lot of swearing up a ladder I speak from experience lol )

    Getting it - slowly.

So the Dreamplex add-on makes the tuner(s) visible in Plex. You can then use the tuners and the already recorded content on the Enigma box.

I'm using Plex as i can view my programmes on mobiles/tablets etc out of home. Am i going the right route here?

I'll take your advice on multiple LNB's. Ill just stick to terrestrial or a DVB-C tuner. Ill have to explore what you get on a Virgin Feed if you terminate the contract.

    Thanks again.

    Cheers, so not worth it.

So the upgrade path from my indoor Aerial would be outdoor aerial or dish and LNB.

More tuners for my Aerials. More Hard Drives. Faster processing for multiplexing, etc

No you cannot watch your satellite tv using plex as far as I know, Dreamplex is a piece of software that allows you to access your plex server via your Satellite box
