Question Is there a VPN for ET8500

    Hi,

Is there a VPN plug in that can be used for ET8500 and can I use any VPN provider like IPVanish or ExpressVPN?
Is there guide how to set up VPN on ET8500?

The other alternative is to install it on my router but trying to avoid that complexity.

I would think installing directly to the router would be way better than any plugin/app etc. Thats my personal opinion n that is what I intend to do when I get a spare few mins.

Your right, although its complex procedure, the router has to be DD-DRT compatible or have that firmware installed for your router, then theres a load of configureations. I was under the impression there may be a Linux plugin. I did read somewhere that VU+ Have the facilities but was not shure if one was available for ET8500

I was thinking of ipvanish or expressvpn ?
I noted there is VPN setting on the receiver but this is open vpn, so not sure how its set up/configured with VPn providers?
I will look at openvix site regarding the config file.

I agree with Andy's suggestion. Installing Vpn client to a router is relatively easy. I am with Safervpn and they provide a full screendump guide of setting up either Openvpn or PPTP. As has been said: One needs to check that your router is capable of being flashed with DD-WRT or Tomato firmware. This is the only tricky operation as often routers (such as my Asus) cannot be directly flashed to DD-WRT, rather you have to flash it to an opensource minimal firmware first as an intermediary (openwrt). The advantages of using the router as the vpn device is that everything on the local network becomes vpn protected without needing additional software. However the disadvantage is that line speed can drop by as much as 25% due to the load on the router.

Note : There are 2 OpenVPN configurations you can set up on a vpn router.
    1. Installing files from your Vpn provider that will change your ip and mask where you are. You choose which location file from the ones provided by your provider.
    2. These routers will let you create your own OPENVPN config file.
This file is then installed on your devices (pc , phone, tablet etc) and when activated via the OPENVPN app on your device will let you log onto your boxes from anywhere without opening ports.
It is also has 256 aes encryption.

You can try configuring PureVPN on your router. I have done so with the help of their support centre and customer support.

You can follow these links here

With using a vpn on router, u can not change servers form the provider?
For example if you use Netherlands server, u can not not change it on the fly to US etc
I gues the same could be with saterlite recivers compared to PC or android media players etc?

Any tips on above would help

The Asus router does allow you to add different country configurations . I have PIA and have configurations setup for different countries. This is done in the vpn menu. Then you just switch to a different country with a couple of clicks in the router menu.

    I have a NETGEAR Nighthawk R70000 with DD-WRT firmware.
But not sure how to configure it to select change different servers on the fly if I install ipvanish configuration in it, I would assume its fixed server as thre is no software install from any VPN provier onlyu configuration settings?
