USB Wi-FI issues with the new Kernel upgrade on 4.2.027

I've mentioned this in another thread, but I think it's time for a new thread.

I'm using a GigaBlue USB 2.0 WiFi 300Mbps adapter Plug & Play USB 2.0. WLAN adapter (RTL8192cu), and it's been 100% fine until the update to 4.2.027.

Every type of access (telnet, playback to a fire tv, windows explorer) now exhibit symptoms.

The simplest example is copying and pasting a file in windows explorer from the ET10k to my pc.

    4.2.026 transfers at about 6Mb/s.

4.2.028 transfers at 200Kb/s, sometimes reaching 2Mb/s, sometimes dropping to zero, and sometimes losing contact altogether.
At this point windows loses the ET10K, and the pc needs rebooting to get it back.

A wired Ethernet connection on 4.2.028 runs fine at about 11.5Mb/s.

(ps I put 4.2.028 in the build number header, but it got truncated.)

@ccs - I had similar issues with a MB wireless dongle (rtl8192cu type, same device code 0bda:8178 as you) when I first had my mut@nt HD51. At the time the problem was due to a generic rtl8xxx kernel module being used and we fixed it by ensuring the rtl8192cu module was built and added to the kernel.

However, you seem to have the relevant module already present in your kernel and the dmesg shows the same rtl8192cu module in use, both in 026 and 028. However there is a difference in the 028 build which shows " ieee80211 phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'rtl_rc'" which may or may not be of relevance. I wonder is there a difference in the firmware modules "rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw_TMSC.bin" or similar which is causing the problem?

@birdman may be of more help here as he was hugely helpful in getting the build process sorted in my case.

Have you installed any extra drivers? Drivers for this stick i'm sure are pre-installed. Re-flash, do not restore anything. Reboot after connecting wifi adapter then test.

Because of the usb tuner problem, I reflashed 027 without a settings or plugin restore. Then Samba wouldn't install.
I then added my usual settings, and moved to 028 with a settings restore.

So no extra plugins or drivers at all (RTL8192CU is pre-installed), but Samba was set up slightly differently to make it work.

I can try a reflash of 028 with nothing else. A Samba install makes it much easier to observe failing, but I'll try without first.

Reflashed 028, and just configured wireless network.

Five telnet sessions repeatedly cat'ing a file to pc worked ok - just the occasional slightest blip which I would have expected.

Adding ftp'ing a large file made no difference, so far so good.

Streaming a recording to OpenWebif on pc is freezing every few minutes for between 5 and 10 seconds (one time was 30 seconds).

I've currently got my pc connected to Ethernet, so the only wireless bit is et10k to router.

It's certainly not as bad as yesterday afternoon when I was trying to get wireless-info working - it was almost unusable.

I'll add samba ("opkg update", followed by a GUI samba install) and see what happens. And repeat on 026.

Added samba - very clunky - one telnet "cat" session is now stopping and starting every few seconds.

No blips at all on 026, telnet flying and OpenWebif streaming to pc (now on wifi) 100% ok.

Here's the relevant part of my dmesg (on a mutant HD51). Very similar to yours but a few minor differences:

    Code:
    [ 9.078233] rtl8192cu: Chip version 0x11
[ 9.184355] rtl8192cu: MAC address: 00:e0:4c:xx:xx:xx < your dmesg doesn't seem to have this line (you may have removed it, I have obscured some of the octets)
    [ 9.189452] rtl8192cu: Board Type 0
    [ 9.193205] rtl_usb: rx_max_size 15360, rx_urb_num 8, in_ep 1
    [ 9.199098] rtl8192cu: Loading firmware rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw_TMSC.bin
    [ 9.205923] ieee80211 phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'rtl_rc'
[ 9.206764] usbcore: registered new interface driver rtl8192cu
    [ 9.324240] EXT4-fs (mmcblk0p3): re-mounted. Opts: data=ordered
    [ 10.261755] rtl8192cu: MAC auto ON okay!
    [ 10.303604] rtl8192cu: Tx queue select: 0x05
    [ 11.797314] wlan0: authenticate with f4:f2:xx:xx:xx:xx
    [ 11.821521] wlan0: send auth to f4:f2:xx:xx:xx:xx (try 1/3)
    [ 11.830114] wlan0: authenticated
    [ 11.834274] wlan0: associate with f4:f2:xx:xx:xx:xx (try 1/3)
    [ 11.844234] wlan0: RX AssocResp from f4:f2:xx:xx:xx:xx (capab=0x431 status=0 aid=8) < your aid is 2
    [ 11.864426] wlan0: associated
    [ 14.100377] NET: Registered protocol family 10
Don't know if it will help or hinder

One other thing I noticed is that your eth0 seems to be active. I have wifi only enabled on my box with the ethernet port disabled. Maybe there is some interaction causing an issue?

It is using a different driver.

    Previously it was using:
    kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8192cu.ko

    now it is using:
    kernel/drivers/net/wireless/realtek/rtlwifi/rtl8192cu/rtl8192cu.ko

which will be because linuxwifi is set in the kernel build options.
This (new) driver is, AFAIK, the one which works for a mutant51 (the issue there was that the rtl8xxxu driver wasn't working well).

There may have been an Ethernet cable connected, but only the wifi adapter was enabled.
The testing I did yesterday (Monday) definitely didn't. (I was using the same cable to connect my pc to the router.)

Edit: Where did you see eth0 as active, I can't see any reference.

..... in fact, it's "LAN connection 2" that I only ever use if I need to.

@birdman - where are you seeing that it is using 8192cu.ko? The dmesg and lsmod show that rtl8192cu is in use for that adapter in both 026 and 028. The rtl8xxxu driver was causing all sorts of issues for me with that dongle for sure.
