The figure should take quite some time after boot to reach 1MiB. If the box is sending the data it will be getting into the GiB range.
    Hi Birdman
i am 100% sure its not the receivers from 8pm to 1am (5 hours) i have been watching them every hour to see the amount used via the telnet command
receiver A RX used 3.3mib and TX used 25mib the TX jumped around 17mib from 23.45 and 00.15 ish other than that its been creeping up slowly around 500kib every hour
receiver B RX used 1.2mib and TX used 150kib
receiver C RX used 2.4mib and RX used 1.1mib

i have also been keeping an eye on the router data and it seems like its being good from 17.30 to 00.30 (7 hours) my total DL was 2392mb and upload was 101mb thats with all devises switched on and connected as normal only thing i have not done this evening is download any content from newsgroups

my main concern is the receivers do they look ok from the data above i have not streamed any content using the boxes at all so is it reasonable to have a little amount of upload on each receiver? i going to sound even thicker now but what would the receivers be uploading?

    thanks again for your time

It's counting the total bytes sent on the connexion. So the fact that you were logged in and looking at data was sending bytes in both directions. All connexions send a certain amount of data in both directions to control flow, socket set-up etc.
