EPG should never be stored to flash.

Not advised to put epg on internal flash as it could fill the flash and crash box, also picons like mk are quite big, better of buying a 8gb thumb drive and putting on there, picons should be ok as I think some have said it makes zapping faster, but putting picons on usb is fine, defo only put epg on external source

(sorry Andy_Hazza had already replied while I was writing)

As long as you have some spare space you can safely store them in flash, but there's no point for the epg to be stored in flash, since it will be read into RAM on bootup, so a slow HDD doesn't give any downsides for EPG.

Picons should ideally be stored in flash, I don't see the point of wasting your money on an otherwise useless 8GB USB stick.

As for MK picons using a lot of space is something that could be prevented, because a lot of optimizations can still be done, but that's out of the hands of the users.
