Sky has confirmed that Sky News HD will launch on May 6 to coincide with coverage of the election night.
The channel, which became temporarily available on April 22 for the Sky News prime ministerial debate between Gordon Brown, Nick Clegg and David Cameron, will be officially launched next Thursday as the election race reaches crunch time.
On election night, Sky News HD will carry the Decision Time programme from 9pm, with Kay Burley joining Jeremy Thompson and Anna Botting to front the pre-count coverage.
Eamonn Holmes and Dermot Murnaghan will then take over as the counts finish and the story shifts to Westminster.
"We've made the news ourselves in 2010 by launching the first UK news service in HD with sharper pictures and enhanced services for HD viewers," said Sky News head John Ryley.
"It's an innovation which clearly defines Sky's strengths, our passion and our restless pursuit to be first and to be the best. The detail of Sky News HD is stunning - I hope our viewers will enjoy the new experience."
The new HD channel is also supported by an upgraded Sky News HD studio and improved resources in the field, along with enhanced HD on-screen graphics.
