Vlc player on vu+ -- solved!!

finally solved how to get vlc working on my vu+ and was able to watch all the avi files on my laptop last night on my vu+. i tried all versions backwards from present and none worked till i went back to the 1.0.5 version. something seems to have changed after that version. but any from 1.0.5 version back work great.

    1. install vlc 1.0.5 on pc
    2.install vlc plugin on vu+
3.setup ip of pc on the vu+ vlc plugin
4.open vlc on pc click view tab then add interface - then web interface
5.now open vlc on vu+ and you should be able to browse files on pc and stream no problem.

also to do this without having to open vlc on pc every time you can do the following and all you will need to do is make sure your pc is on and watch away on vlc on your vu+ without doing any setup on pc.

    Firstly do the steps above
    then:
    1. Right click on VLC shortcut in All Programs, VideoLan, VLC Media Player
    2. Properties
    3. Compatibility tab
    4. Select Windows XP SP3 mode
    5. Apply

    6. Start Button, All Programs, Accessories, Run
    7. Enter following command and OK: C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe -I ntservice --ntservice-install --ntservice-name=VLC-Win7_Service --ntservice-extraintf=http --ntservice-options="--no-qt-privacy-ask --no-qt-error-dialogs"

    8. then go to Windows Task Manager {control, alt and delete}, Services, Services Button, find entry for VLC (VLC-Win7_Service) and start service.

    9. shut down and restart PC and service will be running automatically on boot-up every time.

    11. you can test with: http://127.0.0.1:8080 in internet explorer on PC and you will see vlc Web Interface to show it is working.

    12. Start VLC Plug-in on vu+

    HAPPY VIEWING ON YOUR VU+!

Just managed to set up vlc on vu+ with the two set of instructions, they both work a treat. Cheers irishchris and thanks for all your hard work.

Thanks Iam going to give it a try. It does make sense as I did have VLC working on Technomate 9101 some time ago and it must have been an early version.

so I am right in saying that VLC is running as a server here? If so, would it be possible to perform the same task over tinterweb is a dydns is applied instead of the localIP?

Aslo, would there be means to have a plugin to allow the vu to run as a server to transcode?

The first method also works with Mac OSX with vlc 1.0.5, but I haven't found the correct options for method 2.

    Be sure you modify:-
    7. Enter following command and OK: C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe -I ntservice --ntservice-install --ntservice-name=VLC-Win7_Service --ntservice-extraintf=http --ntservice-options="--no-qt-privacy-ask --no-qt-error-dialogs"

to point to where the "vlc.exe is actually located, hope this helps
