EPL may sell pan-Euro soccer rights

The English Premier League is looking at repackaging the sale of its television football rights away from territory by territory making rights pan-European rights available

The move is a reaction to the ‘pub landlady’ case where using a foreign service decoder to show EPL games was deemed legal – though there were copyright restrictions in terms of presentation.

Richard Scudamore, CEO of EPL, said: “There is not a decision been made yet as to whether we’re actually going to do a domestic deal or not. One of the implications of the ECJ decision is that we are still working on whether we might actually sell rights on a pan-European basis.”

Scudamore told an industry event UK rights in the current deal were worth £1.8 billion (€2.15bn) over three years (ending next season); total foreign rights were £1.4 billion of which £350 million came from Europe
