You can mount a network HDD on your pc, regards playing the movies it all depends on the format.

Off the top of my head in Network settings there's network mount manager. You can then mount shared folder from your PC.

Make sure you set up a cifs share and make sure the folder that you want to see on your pc also has sharing enabled.

CIFS allows you to share with a windows hard drive or media and NFS allows you to share with another linux based hdd or media

Have you found the network browser under menu > setup > system > Network > NetworkBrowser ?

I mounted the pc hard drive in the solo menu...using ip address of my pc and the shared folder in My Computer on the pc. Then play the files in media player in the solo menu

Dont bother trying to play media files via wifi, 54g just isn't fast enough.

Sorry Sic but I have to disagree, I have my files on my laptop running windows 7 and I can watch flawlessly to my ps2, Duo or solo.
Laptop is wirelees, and solo are wirelss. ps3 and Duo are wired to the router.

What resolution are the files your playing on the Solo? Are they HD?
